Calories - Breakfast Cereals

Calories -Breakfast Cereals

Hi guys the last few weeks we have been looking at foods with high calories and this week its breakfast cereals. Now breakfast cereals can be good for you for example oats or bad for you like coco pops or crunchy nut. So lets have a look at some. To give us a starting point lets look at oats which is a
Oats                - 200 Calories per 60 grams
Special K        -230 Calories per 60 grams
Rice Bubbles    -230 Calories per 60 grams
Nesquick         -240 Calories per 60 grams
Weetbix           - 220 Calories per 60 grams
Weetbix crunch - 225 Calories per 60 grams
Carmens            - 280 Calories per 60 grams
Coco Pops         - 235 Calories per 60 grams

So as you can see there are a few surprises like coco pops being lower in calories than Carmens museli. Most museli has dried fruit so that's why they get such high scores in calories. The interesting factor that must be weighed up is the sugar content. Oats have no sugar whereas Coco pops or crunchy nut have 40% sugar so while the calories are similar the coco pops will make your insulin spike and make you crave sugar all day and wont fill you up at all because sugar doesn't have that effect on the body. Because the body never gets full of sugar there is no shut off like with other foods. So you could eat it then still eat a full meal afterwards. Not to mention ruin your teeth and inside.
The other interesting thing is that there is a big difference between the cereal natural and the cereal with dried fruit, honey or flavours added.
So the rules of the day eat the cereal without additives preferably oats or Weetbix steer clear of surgery cereals because whilst the calories are not much higher it will make you grave sugar all day and be hungry all day and there is little or no nutritional value whereas oats are great for your cholesterol and heart.
See you next week.
